What do you want to run?
Check everything you'd power. Adjust the watts and hours if you know them — our defaults are typical for each item.
Watts (W) measure how much power something uses right now — like the speed of a car. Watt-hours (Wh) measure energy used over time — like miles driven. A 100W TV running 5 hours uses 500Wh. Your kit's battery and panels are sized by watt-hours; its inverter is sized by watts.

This sets your "peak sun hours."
Panels don't produce full power all day. Peak sun hours compress a whole day of changing light into the equivalent hours of full-strength sun. Seattle averages about 3.5; Phoenix about 6. It's the single biggest factor in how much solar you need.
Days of battery backup
How many cloudy days should your battery cover without recharging?
This is called days of autonomy. One day works if you have grid power as backup or reliably sunny weather. Off-grid homes usually plan for two to three days so a stormy stretch doesn't leave the fridge warm.
How many of your items run at the same time?
This sizes the kit's inverter.
Batteries and panels make DC power; your appliances need AC power — the kind from a wall outlet. An inverter converts DC to AC, and it's built into every kit we carry. It must be big enough to handle everything running at once, plus the startup surge of motors like fridges and pumps.
Add wind power?
Wind keeps charging at night and on stormy days when solar can't.
A small wind turbine plugs into your kit just like a solar panel, but it generates whenever the wind blows — including at night and during the cloudy, windy storms that shut solar down. It won't replace your panels, but it's a strong second source in coastal, plains, and mountain areas. Several of our kits come with the turbine in the box.
How will you connect it?
Plug appliances straight in, or back up your home's actual circuits.
A transfer switch connects your system to your home's electrical panel, so during an outage your chosen circuits — kitchen, furnace fan, well pump, lights — run from battery power automatically through your normal wall outlets and switches. No extension cords across the floor. It's the difference between "powering some appliances" and "backing up your house." Several of our kits include one.
Your numbers, and the kits that fit
Solar needed = your daily watt-hours ÷ your sun hours ÷ 0.75 (real-world losses from wiring, heat, and charging). Battery needed = daily watt-hours × backup days ÷ 0.8, because batteries shouldn't be drained to zero — that reserve (called depth of discharge) keeps a battery healthy for years. Inverter needed = your peak simultaneous load plus 25% headroom. Motors like fridges and pumps also briefly surge 2–3× their running watts at startup, so check each kit's surge rating too.
Estimates use standard sizing rules (75% solar efficiency, 80% usable battery, 25% inverter headroom) and are a starting point, not an engineered design.
